Sun Facts

"If you don’t wear a sunscreen every day, today is the day to start. Daily application of sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher– whether on its own, or in a moisturizer – will prevent additional damage to your skin. Also, studies have shown that daily use of sunscreen can actually reduce the existing number of actinic keratosis – abnormal skin."

Why Daily Application of Sunscreen

The American Cancer Society recognizes skin cancer as the most common cancer in the United States. The World Health Organization estimates up to 90% of the global burden of disease from melanoma and other skin cancers resulted directly from the adverse effects of UVR exposure. It is the everyday “incidental” exposure, that causes so much skin damage. Ultra Violet Radiation damages the DNA in the skin cells, which can cause premature aging, skin disease, and skin cancer. The UVB rays are considered the most dangerous, but the UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin, piercing through clouds, clothes, window, water, and hair. The destructive radiation of the sun not only generates short-term damage visible as a sunburn but can also cause unanticipated damage that may show up years later with potentially lethal consequences.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation:

  • Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More than one million skin cancers are diagnosed annually.
  • About 90 percent of non-melanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.
  • One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime.
